How Much Organ Meat Can Dogs and Cats Eat?

The short answer

Organ meat is some of the best food you can give a dog or a cat. It's also the part people get wrong the most, usually by treating organ meat like it's one thing. It isn't.

The quick version: in raw-feeding circles the standard convention is that secreting organs make up about 10% of the diet, with liver capped at roughly 5% and other organs like kidney and spleen making up the rest. Heart and gizzard are a different story, they act more like muscle meat, and you can feed them more freely. The exact right amount depends on your pet's size, age, and the rest of their diet, so your vet is the one to set real numbers. But the framework below is the part everyone should understand.

The thing nobody tells you: not all organ meat is the same

This is the whole game, so it goes first.

Offal (aka organ meat) gets lumped together, but nutritionally there are two very different groups, and the difference is exactly what decides how much you can feed.

So when someone says feed 10% organ, they mean the secreting group. Heart is the one that trips people up: it lives inside the body so it sounds like offal, but it's a muscle, and it's fed more like meat than like liver. More on that below, because it matters a lot for cats.

The rundown, organ by organ

Here's what each one actually brings, and how careful you have to be with it. The numbers below are per 100 grams of the raw organ, from the USDA's FoodData Central database.

Liver: the richest, and the most capped

The richest organ, and the most capped, because it's loaded with preformed vitamin A. Beef liver carries about 4,970 µg of vitamin A (RAE) per 100g, with chicken liver close behind at around 3,300 µg. To put that in perspective, that is many times an adult dog's entire daily vitamin A requirement in a single 100g serving. Liver also brings a lot of copper (beef liver, about 9.8 mg), and both copper and vitamin A have safe upper limits, which is why liver is the one organ with its own separate cap.

Vitamin A is fat-soluble, so the body stores the excess instead of flushing it, and too much over time can cause vitamin A toxicity. In dogs that's been linked to joint pain, abnormal bone development, and low energy (Morris et al., 2012), and the underlying biology is the body breaking down its own bone tissue when vitamin A runs too high (Lerner, 2024). Balancing vitamin A, enough but never too much, is a core part of pet nutrition (Shastak & Pelletier, 2024).

Kidney: high in selenium and B12

A secreting organ, so it's in the limited group, but it's a great one to rotate in alongside liver instead of just feeding more liver. Beef kidney is exceptionally high in selenium (about 141 µg per 100g, roughly three and a half times beef liver) and vitamin B12 (about 27.5 µg), plus a lot of riboflavin. It does carry vitamin A, around 419 µg, but that's only about a twelfth of liver's load, which is a good illustration of the point: kidney is a secreting organ you still keep modest, just not capped as hard as liver.

Spleen: rich in iron, low in vitamin A

The one nobody talks about, which is a shame, because the numbers are genuinely impressive. Beef spleen carries about 44.6 mg of iron per 100g. That is roughly nine times the iron in beef liver (about 4.9 mg) and far more than most muscle meat, which makes sense, since spleen is blood-filtering tissue. It's also unexpectedly high in vitamin C (about 45 mg) and a good source of selenium and B12. And unlike liver, spleen has essentially no vitamin A, so it delivers the iron and immune-tissue benefits without adding to the vitamin A load. Underrated.

Heart: technically muscle, not organ

Heart is a muscle, not a secreting organ, so it isn't part of the strict 10% cap and you can feed it more generously. The USDA numbers back this up: beef heart and chicken heart both show essentially zero vitamin A, exactly what you'd expect from a muscle rather than a storage organ, along with good protein, iron, zinc, and B12.

Heart's real claim to fame is taurine, an amino acid heart is especially rich in. (USDA's older SR Legacy entries don't list taurine, but heart being one of the best natural sources is well established in veterinary nutrition.) Taurine matters enormously for cats: they can't make enough on their own and have to get it from food, and a shortfall is linked to serious heart and eye problems, which is why taurine is an essential nutrient for them. Dogs benefit too, especially for heart health.

So how much, total?

Here's the honest version of the rule you'll see everywhere.

The percentages below come from the standard raw-feeding models (BARF and Prey Model Raw). They're built to copy the rough ratio of organ to meat to bone in a whole prey animal, which lands at about 10% organs, with liver around half of that. Worth being clear: these are a practical formulation convention, not a number the research proves. What the science actually establishes is that getting these ratios wrong causes real problems, home-prepared raw diets without careful formulation were found to have nutrient imbalances and deficiencies, and that liver's density means about 5% is the most you can feed before crossing safe upper limits for vitamin A and copper. The percentage is the practical guardrail. The science is why the guardrail exists.

If you're feeding a complete commercial diet and using organs as treats, the math is simpler: treats stay small, organ treats smaller, and remember your pet's regular food probably already has organ and added vitamins in it. It stacks. When in doubt, less.

Dogs and cats aren't the same animal

Two real differences worth knowing.

Cats need preformed vitamin A. Dogs can convert some plant beta-carotene into vitamin A. Cats can't, at all, so they depend on animal sources like organ meat for it. That makes organs genuinely important for cats, not just a nice extra.

Cats need dietary taurine. This is the heart connection. Taurine is essential for cats and they have to get it from food, which is part of why heart (taurine-rich muscle) earns its place in a cat's diet. Dogs are more flexible here, but both do well with it.

So feed organ meat lands a little differently for a cat than a dog. For cats it's closer to a requirement than a bonus.

Questions people actually ask

Is heart an organ or a meat?

Both, technically, but feed it like meat. It's a muscle, it doesn't stockpile fat-soluble vitamins the way liver does (its vitamin A is essentially zero), and it isn't part of the strict organ cap. It's also one of the best taurine sources going, which matters most for cats.

Can I just feed liver and call it organ meat?

You can, but it's the riskiest single choice, because liver is the one organ you can overdo on vitamin A. Variety across organs spreads the nutrients out and lowers that risk. If you only feed one, liver is the one to keep smallest.

How do I introduce organ meat without wrecking their stomach?

Slowly. Organ meat is rich, and too much too fast is a classic cause of loose or soft stools. Start with a small piece, watch the stool, build up gradually. Loose and soft is the usual "too rich, too fast" sign. Truly black or tarry stool is a different thing, don't assume it's the food, get your vet to look.

My pet's food already lists organ meat. Does the treat still count?

Yes. Nutrients from meals and from treats add together, the body doesn't keep separate tabs. If the regular diet already includes organ or added vitamin A, factor it in and keep organ treats modest.

Upper limit
The point where more stops being better. Most nutrients, your pet just passes the extra and moves on. But a few, mostly the fat-soluble vitamins like A and minerals like copper, get stored instead of flushed. Feed past a certain amount, again and again, and it builds up and starts doing harm instead of good. That ceiling is the upper limit. It's the whole reason liver gets rationed, and the reason "it's healthy, so more is better" falls apart with organ meat.
